What Is Shibuya-Kei?
A type of Japanese pop noted for its western influence, Shibuya-kei (meaning 'Shibuya style') is after the trendy shopping district of west Tokyo. The music is the product of an entire generation's consumption of western pop culture. Because western pop is often taken out of context, fetishized, and unfiltered, Shibuya-kei artists combine everything from lounge to hip-hop, creating something uniquely their own yet universally appealing.
